Nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar, A Portrait of Giselle features the transformation of a famed Balanchine ballerina, Patricia McBride, former principal dancer, New York City Ballet, as she prepares to take on the classic role of Giselle under the direction of a grand master coach, Sir Anton Dolin. Interwoven with stories and film footage of the great ballerinas who danced Giselle in the past, including Olga Spessivtzeva, Alicia Markova, and Natalia Makarova, this screening will be accompanied by a discussion led by poet and dance critic Jay Rogoff, in anticipation of the National Ballet of Canada’s production of Giselle this summer at SPAC
