Merce Cunningham, Legacy of Dance

Directed by Marie-Hélène Rebois • 56 min. • France • 2012 Not Rated

A dancer and choreographer for more than 50 years, Merce Cunningham (1919–2009) is considered one of the greatest creative forces in the world. Desiring to preserve his oeuvre, and ensure that the repertory lives on in the spirit of its founder, the Merce Cunningham Trust announced the Cunningham Legacy Plan in 2011, Cunningham’s own vision and roadmap for the future of the company. This new documentary looks at Cunningham’s life and legacy, as well as the efforts made by directors, dancers, and musicians to follow that roadmap, and the logistical and creative challenges they face in protecting this unparalleled body of work.
